The Beartooth Gallery of Fine Art is in a perky yellow-painted building on Red Lodge’s main drag on the same block as the Roman Theater. Inside, the multiple rooms show groups of artwork sorted by subject and style.
Robert Streitmatter and his business partners, Robin Stoner, Steve Galloway, clearly appreciate art. In fact, their decision to open the gallery was prompted by their interest in the expressive paintings by Hardin/Billings painter Harry Koyama. Koyama helped attract other artist to the gallery and one artist led to another until the Beartooth Gallery of Fine Art assembled its impressive cadre of painters, sculptors, glass blowers, potters and furniture makers.
Since the gallery was founded on aesthetics and friendship, it feels like a harmonious place. The majority of the gallery’s artists either live in Montana year-round or have a summer home in the state.
