CEDAR DREAMS – The amazing Native masks of the Pacific Northwest had the strongest influence during my formative years. Being raised north of Seattle, the Northwest lore filtered throughout art and architecture. I spent long hours in the forests around our home. It’s no stretch to imagine the faces ancient people would see in the filtered light and mists of those forests. This sculpture represents my own interpretation of northwestern imagery – my own whimsy and nostalgia for those silent forested moments. I had some Pacific Coast cedar bark sent to me to be included in the hair piece. Cedar bark was used to create clothing, baskets, blankets, etc. It is one of my most cherished scents – a rush of childhood memories, sitting at the base of ancient cedar trees, rain dripping through my hair, Raven calling in the mist…

MEDICINE FOLK – Weasel in his snowy winter coat perched on the shoulder of an Elder, bringing good medicine & campfire tales. A mixture of Northern Plains and Inuit, with a dash of Japanese Ainu. Wandering two-legged and four-legged medicine people of the open plains, forests, tundras. The staff is a beaver-chewed stick from a Spring run-off pool along the Missouri River. Steppe Daughter by Christine McKay – 26″ H
STEPPE DAUGHTER – Inspired by women of the Mongolian Steppes, her attire is my own version but based on the rich felted fabrics of the Steppe people. As a horse culture, I’ve been drawn to Asian Steppe people since a child when my father game me a book, “Genghis Khan,” by Harold Lamb. The concept of living on windy open plains (so similar to Montana’s high plains), with horses gathered close to yurts, was enthralling to a young girl who loved horses but had not one of her own. Girls were included int he broad horse culture, riding as well as the boys. “Steppe Daughter” evokes the richness of color and texture, chilled high plains winds, and songs of horses.
Elk Bedded Down by Joan Kosel – 12″ L x 5 1/2″ W x 13″ T
This carving depicts a Bull Elk bedded down and bugling. Stain was used to color his head, mane, legs and antlers. The entire piece is finished with tung oil.
Each piece is signed and numbered on the bottom.
On June 20th an 21st, Beartooth Gallery celebrated a birthday by hosting a party, art show and silent auction at the Gallery in Red Lodge, Montana.
“Velvet” by Brenna Tyler – 63″ Long x 44″ HighOne highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of Brenna Tyler’s newest masterpiece “Velvet”. Velvet, a spirited horse is 63″ wide x 44″ long.
With knowledge the Red Lodge City Pool was in need of a handicap chair lift which would enable adults and children alike to enter the pool via the lift when the steps or ladder would be difficult, Bob Streitmatter, Robin Galloway, and Steve Galloway, owners of the Gallery, were joined by World Renowned Artists Brenna Tyler, acclaimed western landscape artist Jerry Inman and several others who donated spectacular items for the silent auction where 100% of the proceeds went to this cause. Red Lodge Mayor Ed Williams was presented with a check in the amount of $6,200. The handicap chair lift will be a welcome addition to the City Pool.

Pool Chair Lift for Red Lodge City Pool
Bob, Robin, and Steve are combining the Gallery’s birthday party with an excellent fundraiser to benefit the Red Lodge City Pool. The goal is to raise funds which will go directly to the purchase of a handicap chair life for the pool. This lift will be for both adults and children who need assistance getting in and out of the pool.
Brenna Tyler, world renown artist will unveil her latest masterpiece on Saturday, June 21st. In addition, the amazing sculpture “Clutch” by Brenna will be available for bid in the silent auction. “Clutch” is valued at $3,495. Jerry Inman will also be on hand and has a beautiful original painting available for bid in the silent auction as well. “Above Parkside” is valued at $500. All proceeds from both of these works of art will go directly to the purchase of the pool chair lift. All donations are tax deductible.
In addition to the silent auction there will be a raffle. All proceeds from the raffle will also go to the fundraising efforts.
There will be free food, drink, and beautiful art on both Friday and Saturday, June 20-21, 2014 at the Gallery.
