My name is Micqaela Jones and for the past 12 years now I have been traveling and selling Fine Art with my husband ALex and our 5 children. It has been a privilege and a real adventure to work as a full time artist. Let me tell you a little about myself.
I am the Great, Great, Granddaughter of Chief TuTuWa of the Tosa Wihi Shoshone Tribe. I grew up on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation located 100 miles Northeast of Elko Nevada, on the Idaho border.
My youth was filled with many rich visual and cultural experiences, days spent hunting and fishing and enjoying the beauty of Northern Nevada’s outdoors. As a child, I was always surrounded by art and artists. My father went to school in Boise and studied art. He painted off and on as his schedule allowed. My mother did beadwork on the reservation for many years working for the Levi’s company beading designer jeans at one point, and several of my family members were basket and cradle board makers. Art was something you did because you loved to create. The idea of making a career creating art, was far from my mind at this point in my life.
At the age of 20 I married and moved to Santa Cruz CA. where my husband Alex and I live today. Over the years we’ve traveled a lot and have spent time living in Nevada, southern Utah and Mexico. It was in Utah that I began to paint more seriously. I had been dabbling in paint for some time and decided to go ahead and show my work to a few people to get their reactions. A gallery owner that my husband worked for saw my paintings and offered me a chance to show my work at his gallery. That was the beginning!
As my work started to sell, I realized That it may be possible to make a career out of being an artist and so I really began trying to develop my own unique style. As a self taught artist, a lot of my time was spent trying various techniques trying to put on canvas what was in my head.
In 2005 I participated in my first Juried art show in Saint George Utah. In 2006 I had the opportunity to show my work at 3 major juried art shows including, the “Santa Fe Indian Market” in Santa Fe New Mexico, the “Eiteljorg Museum Indian Market” in Indianapolis Indiana and the “Autry Museum Market” in Los Angeles California. Those shows helped to get my work outside of Utah and things really began to take form. Since then I have continued to show at galleries and Juried shows around the country. In 2007 and 2010, I had solo exhibits at the Northeastern Nevada Museum and most recently my work was on exhibit at the Museum of Art in Reno Nv. I now have paintings in the permanent collections of both Museums. I am truly honored to have my work collected both Nationally and Internationally.
Today from my home studio in Santa Cruz Ca, I continue to work on new concepts, ideas and techniques, always trying to push my boundaries as an artist. My work has evolved into a true intertwining of my culture as a Native American person with the modern, contemporary world around me. The results are paintings that are traditional in their subject matter but truly stylized in there approach, with vivid colors, layers and textures that draw the viewer in.
